Mentors Needed for UMB’s CURE Scholars Program

The UMB CURE Scholars Program is in need of UMB students, faculty, and staff to volunteer as mentors during the 2017-18 school year.

Consider becoming a mentor and nurturing the career of a future health care professional. Your knowledge and experience can make a huge impact on the life of a middle school student from West Baltimore, and the commitment will not require much of your time.

Mentors will be expected to:

  • Commit to at least one year of mentorship, with contact at least once a week or bi-weekly.
  • Assist their mentee with the transition from student to professional, supporting them in decisions (such as choosing the best high school or college).
  • Allow their mentee to shadow them at work or accompany them to a meeting, conference, or seminar.
  • Create goals for their own personal and professional development through participation in this program.

Those interested in becoming a mentor are invited to a Lunch & Learn on Thursday, Oct. 5, at noon in the Office of Procurement (Main Conference Room) in the Saratoga Building.

You can RSVP for The Lunch & Learn here and learn more about the CURE Scholars Program by checking out its web page.

To apply as a mentor, register here.

Do not hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns to Borndavid McCraw, UMB CURE Scholars Program mentoring coordinator, bmccraw@umaryland.edu.

Thank you for your support in cultivating a vibrant mentorship community!

Welcome Mother-Daughter Cancer Fundraising Team

On Aug. 27, breast cancer survivor Carolyn Choate and her daughter Sydney Turnbull will paddle in to Baltimore Harbor near the Science Center at 8:30 a.m., completing their 300-mile kayaking journey to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM).

Choate, 59, a 14-year breast cancer survivor, credits the work of the late UM SOM scientist Angela Brodie, PhD, for saving her life. Brodie developed the use of aromatase inhibitors to fight estrogen-driven breast cancer, a common form of cancer. On Aug. 10, the mother-daughter team will begin their journey on the Delaware River, making several stops along the way for media events and to share their survivor stories. They will be raising funds for a special endowment in honor of Brodie.

As Choate and Turnbull finish their journey in Baltimore Harbor, representatives from the University of Maryland and the School of Medicine, Baltimore City and Maryland State officials will be there to greet them and highlight the impact UM SOM’s breast cancer research has had on millions of survivors worldwide.

Choate also will be honored by the Orioles at their home game in Oriole Park on Aug. 28. Please come and show your support.

As you follow Choate and Turnbull on their journey be sure to share your thoughts and photos using the hashtag #cancerkayakers.

Visit the UM SOM website to learn more about their trip and how to support future breast cancer research in honor of Angela Brodie so that more individuals like Choate and Turnbull can experience the positive impact of this research.

Street Closures Announced for Mid-July

Pine Street will be blocked off Friday, July 14, through Sunday, July 16. The road will be closed between Saratoga and Lexington streets. No parking will be allowed in this area or in adjacent parking lots.

Pine Street between Lexington and Fayette streets will have no parking on either side of the street but will be open to vehicle traffic.

Vehicles in the way after 5 p.m. on July 14 will be towed.

Street-Closures

This will restrict parking for the police station and the parking lots between the stations. Pedestrian traffic will be able to access the police station on the west sidewalk of Pine Street.

Notice for Pearl Street Garage Parkers

Pearl Street Garage parkers, please be aware that the ongoing demolition of the Walter P. Carter Center has moved into the next phase.

From June 12 to July 8, there will be garage parking modifications: the area closest to the garage will be demolished which will require additional spaces to be taken out of service.

Note: This could cause the Pearl Street Garage to become full more frequently.

Temporary Parking Garage Reassignments

Parking and Transportation Services is offering a limited number of permit holders the opportunity to relocate temporarily to the Penn, Saratoga, or Grand Garages. Requests will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to Request a Relocation

  1. Please email your parking liaison your first and last name, permit number, and garage selection (Penn, Saratoga, or Grand).
  2. Pick up a temporary permit from the Cashiers’ Office located at the SMC Campus Center, 621 W. Lombard St., lower level.
  3. When the construction no longer affects the Pearl Street Garage parking capacity, your liaison will let you know when you can return to your home garage.

Bike Month

National Bike Month

Are You a Biker?

May is National Bike Month. Sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, it includes an ever-expanding series of events in communities nationwide; but the biggest day of the month is Bike to Work Day.

Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try. Understanding bicycling skills and safety is paramount to having a safe biking experience.

Whether you bike to work or school, to save money or time, preserve your health or the environment, or simply to have fun and explore your community, National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride.

National Bike Month Events

  • Bike to Work Week (May 15-19)
  • Bike to School Day (May 10)
  • Bike to Work Day (May 19)

According to the League of American Bicyclists, many who commute to work for the first time during Bike to Work Week become regular riders to their places of employment. The popularity of bicycling to work in the U.S. has grown quickly in recent years, and it has more than doubled in many bicycle friendly communities, such as Washington, D.C.

Tips for planning an event during National Bike Month are available.

Interesting Biking Statistics

  • 40 percent of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get to work.
  • With increased interest in healthy, sustainable, and economic transportation options, it’s not surprising that, from 2000 to 2013, the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew by more than 62 percent.

Bicycling Resources

Want more information on biking? Take a look as some of the following resources.

UMB’s Bike Parking Facility

The University’s Parking and Transportation Services provides a secure bike cage in the Pratt Street Garage to encourage bicycle commuting by staff, faculty, and students.

The cage holds up to 44 bikes, is open 24/7, and is monitored by security cameras to keep bikes, and riders, safe. Registration and a small fee are required to utilize the cage. It is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and users have access to shower facilities at URecFit in the SMC Campus Center.

Carey School of Law Bicycle Club

The Francis King Carey School of Law Cycling Club, also known as UMB Law Bikes, promotes bicycling and other alternative forms of transportation. The group also advocates for the protection and recognition of bicycle commuters at the school, provides education to UMB students about bicycle safety, and organizes group rides.

Texting and Driving

Don’t Text and Drive

Driving Safety – Put Your Phone Away! Don’t Text and Drive.

WHAT IS DISTRACTED DRIVING?

When we think of the term “distracted driving” the first thing that comes to mind is cellphone usage in tandem with driving a car. However, distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety. These types of distractions include:

  • Texting
  • Using a cell phone or smartphone to make a call, check email, play a game, etc.
  • Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player
  • Reading, including maps
  • Using a navigation system
  • Watching a video
  • Eating and drinking
  • Changing clothes
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming

But, because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is considered by far one of the most alarming distractions.

The average time your eyes are off the road while texting is approximately 5 seconds. When traveling at 55mph, which is enough time to cover the length of a football field blindfolded!

What You Can Do to Help

According to the FCC Consumer Guide there are things you can do to help:

“Give clear instructions – Give new drivers simple, clear instructions not to use their wireless devices while driving. Before new drivers get their licenses, discuss the fact that taking their eyes off the road – even for a few seconds – could cost someone injury or even death.

Lead by example – No one should text and drive. Be an example for others and, if you need to text or talk on the phone, pull over to a safe place. Set rules for yourself and your household regarding distracted driving.

Become informed and be active – Tell family, friends and organizations to which you belong about the importance of driving without distractions. Take information to your kids’ schools and ask that it be shared with students and parents.”

Flat Tire

Parking Tip of the Month

The UMB Office of Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) is committed to providing the University community with a variety of safe and efficient resources for parking and transportation.

Parking Amenities

What happens when you go to the garage to leave for the day and you find you have a flat tire, are locked out, or need a jump? PTS offers lockout services, battery jumps, and flat tire assistance. Call 410-706-4260 for help.

Alternative Transportation

We also offer a variety of alternative transportation options. Shifting away from our country’s reliance on single occupancy vehicles will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air and water quality, reduce dependence on foreign oil, alleviate traffic congestion, and improve public health and equity. In doing so, we will improve overall quality of life.

Charter Services

UMB now offers cost-effective and comfortable charter services for faculty, staff, and students traveling for University business. Charter services promote community outreach by assisting with transportation for University-related research and service projects. Services are provided by the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) Department of Transportation Services.

Garages, Maps, and Feedback

And on days you drive yourself, there are numerous garages on campus for your comfort and convenience; maps are easily accessible on the UMB Parking and Transportation website; and there is a way to voice your praise and/or concern via an online Parking and Transportation survey.
